Hawaii Five-O 2010

Thursday, September 30, 2010

I actually never knew what the show was all about.  I've been reading that the 2010 version is quite good, plus having Alex O'Loughlin play the lead - made me even more curious.  Last night, my Panget brought home two episodes of Hawaii Five-O.  I was too curious to wait for him (so we can watch it together) - and so I let the temptation set it and watched the first two episodes by myself!

Alex O'Loughlin is gorgoeous as he can ever be!  I like his look now - cleaner as compared to what he looked like in the defunct show Moonlight (but I loved him in Moonlight!).  I was laughing when I saw Daniel Dae Kim in the show - it seems like he never left Hawaii (Lost was filmed in Hawaii).  As for Steve Caan - I must say, I was waiting to see him on TV for a while, I soooo love his humor and I think he's a good actor.  Grace Park is sort of familiar because I see her whenever I channel surf to the SyFy channel particularly in Battlestar Gallactica.

The first two episodes were really nice, I like the dialogue and I really enjoyed the humor especially the exchange of Steve and Danno.  I enjoyed their 'talks in the car' immensely, to be honest - I get kilig, and I don't know why!  Hahaha..

I am looking forward to watching more episodes of this show.

Hawaii Five-O, I like!! :)

Weddings and Reminiscing..

Sunday, September 26, 2010

My Panget and I attended his cousin's wedding.

Let me be honest, I love weddings - I don't know why.  I get teary eyed, smile from ear to ear and get giddy with happiness.  The only explanation for this is that - I remember how happy my wedding day was for me.

With the couple's entrance song, I was taken back to my wedding day - because the song they played, was the song used by the magical Pat Dy with his photo slideshow during my wedding last year.

I couldn't help but reminisce the song, the wonderful photo slideshow and what transpired that day.  I am sharing with you the lyrics & and video of the song:

Ripe by Ben Lee

The moon sheds light across the end of the bed
You made me wait but now I'm touchin? your leg
And I remember all the little things you said
Quesadillas made with cheese and a rock band who were Japanese

So for once in my life
I saw what I wanted and took a bite
I picked the fruit from the tree
And it was ripe

Your love got big, your jokes got worse each afternoon
Like bacon at a Bar Mitzvah, like a lead balloon
And who?s to say what really happened in that room each day
I was lookin? for a bride, you were lookin? for a groom

So for once in your life
You saw what you wanted and took a bite
You picked the fruit from the tree
And it was ripe

And all you people are the heroes I?ve known
We're staring off the edge into the unknown
We are not there yet but we cannot got home
So we cry and we sing, yeah, I remember everything

How for once in our lives
We saw what we wanted and took a bite
We picked the fruit from the tree
And it was ripe

And it was ripe
And it was ripe
And it was ripe

I know its a long shot but.. I would like to go back in time and relive my wedding day, because it was the calmest I have ever been.  No worries, no problems - just smiles and laughter all day.  I let the day unfold and surprise me.

Congratulations Eric & Made!! :)
We love you!!

Fish & Co's NEW items..

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

I've actually only been to Fish & Co. once and I loved their fish and chips.  My only complaint was that it was very expensive - for a fish and chips, but man it was really good.  Their tagline, the best fish and chips in town - is very true.

Last Thursday night, I was invited by friends Tita Jane and Carlo to try out their new items on the menu that were non-fish, which were chicken and lamb.

The dishes were good, the pasta side dishes were even better!  Hahaha..  I especially liked the pasta side dish of the Breaded Chicken Piggyback, it was really good!

The best Fish & Chips in town..

Breaded Chicken Piggyback

 Grilled Lamb Chops

Shrimp and Chicken Breast Al Pesto

Thanks to Fish & Co for stuffing us with a superb meal!!

Hurry and visit the nearest Fish & Co. to sample their new dishes!

Terrible Tapella

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Last Monday night, my college blockmates and I went out for a reunion dinner. It was actually long overdue. The last one we had was last year and it was in Italliani's, this year - one of our blockmates suggested Tapella at Greenbelt 5.

The place looked impressive with the interiors and the diners were mostly foreigners or expats. I was actually late but my friend Mira ordered the two paellas ahead of time because it took about thirty minutes to cook.

When I got hold of a menu - I was confused. The menu for me was little hard to comprehend, maybe because it was a fine dining restaurant and that they've decided to name the dishes with weird sounding foreign names the back part of the menu was I think a Spanish language menu.  I had a server explain to me what the dishes were about. Honestly, I got turned off.  I mean, food should be simple enough to understand right?

When the food came - we were already hungry. I served my tablemates with their paella and I noticed that the paella was wet. I wasn't sure if this was their take on their paella but I wasn't happy, I wanted one that has those tutong all over the pan, but hey - who was I to say, right? The second of the two paellas arrived and it looked, well too bright yellow and when I dug the serving spoon in - well, it was again very wet.  This made us all wonder on the texture, was the paella cooked hastily or was that their style?

The all meat Paella

Manchego cheese Paella

The first of the two paellas was good but the second was well, we honestly didn't like the taste or the lack thereof and the second was the popular Machego cheese paella.  My friend Theresa asked for salt, which wondered me - she told me because it lacked taste!

What turned me off the most was the Salpicao with white beans.  My friend Shirley and I thought to share the dish because we were told by the server that the dishes can be shared by two people.  Lo and behold, when the dish arrived - it was placed in a clear glass, and it was small.  Shirley and I looked at each other and then looked at the dish!  We both thought, how on earth are we going to share that particular dish?!  Here's a comparison pic with a San Mig Pale Pilsen.  This dish cannot be shared by two!  It can only feed one person!  And to think that there's no rice that accompanied it, when the usual salpicao is accompanied by rice.

Next up was the Mini Angus burgers - they were indeed mini - and not worth the price.  The tomato and the onions were even but into half!  We were actually laughing out loud when we saw the dish, it was too tiny and totally not worth it.

We didn't take any pics of the fish dish that my friend Cherry got, it was tuna with tomato sauce.  I complained to the server that it tasted very malansa and all the server told me was 'Sorry about that' and she walked away.  This irritated us more!

We were all disappointed with our meals and with the price we paid - it was not worth it at all.

CHOCOLATE - Was I cured??

Monday, September 13, 2010

Last night at my friend's child's birthday party - I did the unthinkable.

I ate a slice of chocolate cake!

Yes, for those who know me, I do not like the taste of chocolate.  But somehow yesterday, I had this urge to buy a chocolate cake, thus I bought Polly's Chocolate cake.  Then, at my friend's party - I had a taste of the chocolate cake served there.  Fran who was sitting beside me was shocked!  hahaha..

When I got home - the urge was still there, thus I cut a slice of Polly's chocolate cake and munched on it while watching a few episodes of The Mentalist.  I enjoyed eating the cake immensely saying that it has got to be the best chocolate cake I have tasted.  I was actually tempted to get another slice but, then I thought I might not be able to sleep because of the sugar high.

A few minutes later, I felt a little weird.  I knew something was off because I was uneasy and feeling queasy.  My stomach was grumbling slowly - which prompted me to run to the bathroom.

Lo and behold.. I threw up everything chocolate..

I guess my tummy wasn't approving, or maybe the baby wasn't so eager on the chocolate?

So there goes my sudden chocolate craving - down the toilet drain.

I'm not cured after all..

Sigh...

Massage, OH! Massage..

Saturday, September 11, 2010

I haven't had a massage in a loooong while..

And since learning that I was on the way - well, I was told by friends not to have one.

I asked my doctor and she gave me the go signal - just make sure not to touch the tummy area.

I debated with friends on this - and finally, I decided to have one.  But having one - I had to look for a reputable one who knows what do to.  I asked my good friend Alch and she gave me a number to call.

Image borrowed from THIS site

I contacted her last week.

And just now - I got my well deserved massage.

She seemed to know what she was doing, she told me there are certain parts of my back that she couldn't touch or put pressure on which was specifically my pelvic bone on my lower back.  I was badly wanting her to knead that part, unfortunately - she said she couldn't.

The massage was well worth it.  It was soooo good that I wanted to have one again next week!

Massages are really a great great way to relaaaaaaaaaax....

Thanks L!! :)

Negligence of Vets in Practice

Thursday, September 09, 2010

A loss of a dog is heartbreaking, most especially if its due to the negligence of a trusted vet.  This my friend S' story.  She lost Marshall due to the negligence of a vet she trusted.  Please be warned guys.

Marshall was an eight month old German Shepherd puppy. He was a very happy, friendly and smart dog. He brought so much joy into our lives. However, his life was cut short because of the negligence and ignorance of one of the veterinarians at Vets in Practice.

We brought Marshall to Vets in Practice because his paws appeared red and swollen. The vet assigned to us was Dr. Alison Saile. She prescribed betadine scrubs and Inflamol to cure his paws. Since we were there already, we decided to check if he had a recurrence of demodectic mange. A skin scraping test confirmed the recurrence. Dr. Saile prescribed an Ivermectin shot. Knowing that Marshall was a sensitive dog, we told Dr. Saile that we did not want that shot until his paws are better. Two simultaneous treatments could possibly stress him out and weaken his immune system. However, she insisted the need for the shot. It could get worse without the shot. I asked what the side effects of Ivermectin were and she confidently said there was none. Because of this, we agreed to get the shot.

The day after the shot, Marshall started to lose his coordination. We first thought that maybe his paws were sore that’s why he sort of walked differently. Two days after the shot, he was slipping and falling all over the place. He just wanted to sleep. That’s when I started to research and found out that loss of coordination and drooling were side effects of Ivermectin. I also found out that White German Shepherds, Collies and other dogs should not be given Ivermectin because they lack a certain gene to process it. It could cause blindness and death.

We rushed Marshall back to Vets in Practice to try to flush out the toxin from his body. He was given fluids, steroids, liver tonics, B complex but it was too late. He was actually paralyzed to death.

This tragic incident should not have happened if only Dr. Saile and the rest of the doctors at Vets in Practice knew that Ivermectin should never be given to white German Shepherds. Several studies have been published all over the world. I even sent them copies of studies published in 2007 and 2009. It’s already 2010. How come they did not know?

To make things worse, they even lost the leash of Marshall. Dr. Donato said that one of the guys must have put the leash on another dog. I know our dog is gone and I don’t actually need the leash. But that leash is Marshall’s. And I want it back.

To make a long story short, if ever I have another dog, I wouldn’t take my dog back to Vets in Practice anymore. Their negligence cost my dog’s life. They did not even admit that it was their fault nor did they apologize. They only apologized after we sent them a letter saying how upset and angry we are over the situation. The offending doctor sent an apology via text message. I just feel that even if they are animal doctors, they don’t really have much compassion for our dog and for us. A dog dying must be a regular occurrence for them, but definitely not for us.

Banko Sentral: Please print new 20 pesos!!

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

For a while now, we have been getting old and worn out 20 pesos.

Sorry for the inverted pic, I took them via photbooth..

Whenever we ask banks to change them - they say that its be BEST that they have.

I know for a fact that foreign countries print new money when the ones in circulation are old and worn out.

So I ask - why not print new ones?  I mean, is it that expensive?

My mom used to work in a bank and during her time, the management doesn't allow the release of old worn out money.  Also, they sort out money in different conditions - they have a stack for new ones, semi-crispy one, crumpled crispy ones and old worn-out money.

What happened to the current system?  Why don't tellers/banks sort money anymore?

Hmmm...

Trouble, trouble, HELPER trouble..

When I was in Grade School, all my friends and I could talk about was when we'll reach High School and stop studying. When I reached High School the topic shifted to boys and dating. When I got to college, almost the same topic was discussed who was dating whom, what careers we would eventually go to. After college, we discussed about settling down and about the future.

When I got married, the number one topic of discussion - the house help.

There are people who are lucky to find that perfect helper that will stay with them for a long time, while some are unlucky and keep changing from time to time. It is stressful because managing a household is not easy. Believe me, it looks easy but it's not.

This brings me to my recent stressful moment. Helper woes.

You see, I have this helper who is very lazy. I already made out a list of things to do, printed them on paper and even laminated it for her so she can browse on it from time to time. But she doesn't care, she just does her own thing. She was with me for seven month. Until I really got tired of reminding her of things to do - I had to let her go. But before she left, I got to speak to the sister of a friend's helper - the sister of the friend's helper was looking for a job (she was based in Bacolod), and thus I asked to speak to her, to interview her a bit. I asked if she was masipag, and she said yes, I asked if she could cook, she said a little, I then told her her salary and that there's a day-off of only once a month and I do not allow overnights day-offs, she agreed. After the conversation - my friend then sent money for their boat fare and their 1k salary advance. After a few days - she got to Manila, I had to pick her up at my friend's house. She seemed really nice and looked decent, although I doubted her age, she said that she was 39 but she looked older than 39, but I didn't mind this little detail. I was more concerned on how she'd work. For a week, my mom's helper was with her to help her out and guide her on what she has to do.

My mom's helper who has been with us for about ten years told me in confidence that my helper has told her that she wished that they were together, and that my mom's helper doesn't leave her alone. This made me wonder, why she would say that. After a few days with me, when I was about to go to work, she asked if she could make an advance on her salary. This made me laugh, I mean - barely a week with me and she's asking for a salary advance? I then told her about my policy on not granting salary advances, she then told me that she just asked me, she was taking a chance that I might say yes. I also lent her a cellphone so I can contact her in case of emergencies, and so that her family can contact her too! I gave her a load good for one month also, so she can make calls right?

After a few week, when I reminded her to always have breakfast prepared for my Panget, she burst into tears and told me that she was having a hard time cleaning the whole house and that she was takot to cook for for us because we might not like what she has cooked. She then proceeded to tell me that she didn't expect to work for a Chinese couple. This irked me because what the hell is the difference working for a Pinoy, American and Chinese couple? If she was looking for work, whatever race her employers was should not matter right? But I guess for her, it mattered heavily. She then told me that she's feeling numbness in her arms from working all day. First of all, I NEVER told her to clean the whole house everyday, in fact - I have a laminated list of things to do everyday, once a week and once a month! Where did that come from? When everything was settled and cleared, she then looked happier and normal.

Then come last week, she asked me if there was 'something' in our house, because she felt that there was. She was cleaning our bathroom one day and she said that she felt something touch her waist. I then told her that it might have been hunger or paranoia because if there was indeed something, my two previous helpers would have mentioned it, my mom's helper would have told me too.

Last Saturday during dinner, she went up to me and told me that she wanted to leave already. This was because she felt something and was really afraid. She then told me that the night before, she saw something - a black shadow going up the stairs. She said that she couldn't sleep and that she has been bothered for a while. I am not the type to force the issue, if she didn't want to work anymore, by all means go! She was convinced to go, she even said that her brother will pick her up the next morning. She then called her sister, my friend's helper - her sister then asked to speak to me, she asked me if I had a problem with my helper. I told her that I do not have any problems, it was her sister that had issues with the work and the house, she then asked me if it was okay to still take her, I said yes of course but it seemed like her sister was convinced to leave already. I then told my helper that my mom suggested for me to buy a radio for her to use since the house was quiet during the day. After saying that she told me that was willing to work again, and so I accepted.

Just before lunch, I received a call from my friend. She told me that my helper spoke to her sister and told her that she didn't have any food to eat for the past two weeks. What the hell?! My friend said that she called me so that I could fix whatever issue there was with me and my helper. I thank this friend of mine, THANKS S!!

I was honestly pissed, I then confronted my helper. I told her what was this she was telling her sister that she didn't have food to eat. She then burst into tears telling me that she wasn't eating because she didn't know what she was allowed to get frozen chicken & meat from the freezer and veggies from the refrigerator. I was very much irritated because all of my helpers knew (because I told them from Day 1) that they could get anything from the fridge. She said that she didn't recall me saying it - which was honestly bull because she remembers me asking her what she wanted to eat! Why would I ask her what she wanted to eat when I didn't want to feed her in the first place? When her sister would call her to ask what she had for lunch, she tells her that she hasn't eaten lunch, of course - her sister will get worried right? I then asked her why she didn't eat - she then tells me that she has lost her appetite after doing her chores - now, is that my fault?

I was really worked up and so I asked her, if she was just making an excuse to leave her work, because I don't buy those excuses - she could just tell me flat out if she wanted to leave and I will let her leave! Why make an excuse to leave right? She then said that she wanted to continue to work, but she had to call her sister first to ask if she will stay or leave. Oh my gosh, by this time - I was pissed. If she had to ask her sister EVERY little detail, then she might as well ask her sister for her salary! I mean why ask her sister's opinion? Couldn't she decide on her own? My gosh! I then waited for about 15 minutes while they spoke - her sister told her to work till she reaches a month so that she can at least get part of her salary, to which I agreed. I would let her go easy because I advanced her part of her salary and the boat fare, how was I supposed to get those back right?

I have to say, I treat my helpers very humanely. I give then more than enough food, they share what my Panget and I eat. I encourage them to take breaks and even tell them to watch TV at night. I speak to them in a very soft tone using 'po' for elder helpers. I never raise my voice to them and when I need something, I ask them nicely with a smile and say thank you after. I have never threatened them nor have I hurt them in any way. I do not understand what this current helper's problem is, I am honestly hurt and confused. I mean, it would be okay if ever I did not give her food, but I always reminded her to take food from the fridge, I even have a stash of sardines, instant noodles, corned beef for her in case she gets hungry.

Hiring help is so stressful, what more in the coming months when I'll be looking for a good and capable yaya. Will they get along? Hahaha!!

These woes of ours tell us that we're in a certain stage in life. Right now, I'm at the stage of newlyweds looking for good help! hahaha...
