Cooking Quest: Arroz Caldo ala Didi's mom

I have been wanting to cook Arroz Caldo for years, but was too scared to do so.  I honestly had no idea how to cook lugaw/congee.  I just know that a shortcut would be to put uncooked rice in a small container, put water and freeze it.  The frozen uncooked rice makes it easier for the rice to get mashed/durog when it cooks. So I asked my mom how she makes her yummy Arroz Caldo.  She told me that it was very very easy.  I honestly didn't believe her - because I knew that cooking lugaw/congee took a lot of time.  She told me - 'Cook the lugaw/congee first, and then saute your onions, put your chicken and when its cooked, pour the chicken and onions in the lugaw/congee and that's it'  It's really easy, she said and I was honestly doubting her. I was also looking for a certain ingredient to put into the Arroz Caldo.  I asked on Twitter and my friend Sheila said its called Kasubha - it may be called Saffron here in Manila, but it isn't the real one...

Gino's Brick Oven Pizza

In all honesty - two of my favorite food in the world!  Pizza and doughnuts, and yes they're housed in the same spot along Katipunan in Quezon City. I knew of Cello's doughnuts from way back in 2006 - I was gifted by my friend Kim a box of their assorted mini doughnuts for Christmas.  I especially loved the cheese doughnut - I think it was called ensaymada doughnut before.  As for Gino's Brick Oven Pizza, I've been hearing about it from my friend Kath and Fran, but I never got the chance to try it. Early this year, I learned that my good friends Brian and his wife invested into the company.  I was very excited because I love pizzas and doughnuts!  Here's a preview of what we ordered: Burata When I posted this on my IG, I got a LOT of reactions! Brian says that their Burata run out fast!  As in really really fast!  So come in early to be able to order this! I loved the texture and taste of this simple yet very flavorful appetizer,...

When your change is - KULANG..

I really hate it when retailers don't give you the exact correct change.  What I hate more is that they expect you to understand without informing you that it's kulang!  They will just hand you the change and be silent.  I've often asked these cashers why their change is kulang and they will just reply with 'Wala po kaming sukli eh!'  or they will just give you more - just to silence you.  To me, that is not the point.  The point is - inform us that it is kulang.  I would appreciate it more and disregard the fact that it was kulang. Case in point: I know it's a teeny tiny amount - but my point is, will a cashier accept it if our payment was kulang?  Of course not, right?  They will demand that we pay in the right amount or not buy the item at all!  So, the same logic goes for me - demanding the correct change.  I called the attention of the cashier on this - and she looked at me with apologetic eyes and said that she didn't ...

OMBU: Modern Filipino Restaurant

I have been passing by this place for more than a year now.  I've been getting flyers on my car when I hear Mass at nearby St. Paul the Apostle parish.  I've seen IG feeds of the food they serve courtesy of the #SoMoms. I've been quite curious actually but never brought myself to try the place out.  I finally got to try it a few months ago!  And I'm happy to have an addition to my list of good Pinoy food restaurants in my area! The place is really clean - from the outside as well as the inside.  The interiors are modern, they used ceiling to floor glass windows to encase the restaurant which is brilliant if you ask me!   Natural light during the day and the place looks very well lit and inviting at night!  I also liked that the place is very quiet. Here's what we ate: Crispy Crablets These were really good, I liked that they were crispy and not makunat. Kailee and Connor enjoyed munching on the crablet legs! Chicken Binakol...

Papa John's Carbonara Pizza

I LOVE PIZZA. For me its a the complete food!  It has carbs, protein and veggies - and all in 1 bite!  Hahaha..  But seriously, I love pizzas.  Ask my Panget and he will tell you, pizzas are one of my favorite food (the all time favorite is french fries). I first heard of Papa John's a long time ago while watching an American news segment on cable.  It was showcasing how Papa John's has grown and how it has been giving its competitor Pizza Hut a run for its money in the Pizza industry.  I remember seeing the real Papa John showing the viewers on how he personally makes his pizza.  He then elaborated on this tagline - Better Ingredients, Better Pizza. I have been a fan of Papa John's since it arrived in our shores.  We have been ordering from their Tomas Morato branch for pick up ever since they opened, why pick up?  Simply because its faster!  And that means, I can have my pizza is a shorter amount of time! I am happy to share t...
